Edwin Henry Landseer

Edwin Henry Landseer, Shoeing, c.1844, oil on canvas, 142.2 x 111.8 cm, Tate Britain, London. SourceHave you ever seen a glossier coat? Landseer was commissioned by Jacob Bell to paint his mare ‘Old Betty’, and he did so in a most flattering manner. The horse is the centre of attention, despite the lower half of the composition being so busy. The creature’s height, however, makes up for this, as only she is able to bathe directly in the outdoor light.
