   I was reblogging this paiting in the previous posting, and couldn’t add more pictures, so this additional posting with the detail showing the mirror (I also indicated another interesting element, a depiction of the unicorn. 

   The {hi}story of behind this portrait and all its meanings, allusions and symbolisms are still largely unknown. There are, by the way, a few different versions and look-alikes of this work - I once tried to unpack this story (see Mirrors on the whimsical stands) but still have more questions than answers.

   François Clouet

   This is assuringly the portrait of Diane de Poitiers, the mistress of King Henry II of France, depicted by (allegedly) François Clouet (1571). There are a lot of enigmas in this portrait, and one of them is in fact the mirror that we can see in the background.
